Vancouver, British Columbia – Westport Innovations, a Vancouver-based company specializing in alternative-fuel technologies, has signed an agreement with Volvo Powertrain to develop engines fuelled by biogas and natural gas.

Westport has partnered with Volvo since 2009, as a Tier 1 development supplier for heavy-duty natural gas engines and the associated supply chain.

Under the new agreement, which has evolved from the first, the two companies will agree on the priority for the commercial launch of gaseous fuel engines and will share the risks of development, with Westport expecting to generate revenue on each new natural gas or biogas engine sold.

“Our development and commercialization program with Volvo continues to develop, both in scale and scope,” said David Demers, CEO of Westport Innovations. “Natural gas and biogas are quickly becoming the alternative fuel of choice for commercial vehicles and we expect this will lead to a new generation of clean, low-emission engines from  Volvo.”
