Washington, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill that could accelerate more widespread adoption of vehicles powered by natural gas.

Bill 1622, passed by unanimous consent, would direct the Secretary of Energy to conduct a five-year program of natural gas vehicle research, development and demonstration, and coordinate with the natural gas vehicle industry and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to streamline the certification of natural gas conversion systems to federal certification requirements and in-use emissions standards. Such certification would allow conversion equipment to enter the market faster and less expensively.

The bill would authorize US$30 million per year from fiscal year 201o to 2014 for natural gas vehicle research and development.
