Tokyo, Japan – Toyota plans to begin mass production of electric vehicles (EVs) in the U.S. in 2012, and fuel cell vehicle production in 2015, according to a report by the Green Car Congress.

The remarks were made by Toyota Motor president Akio Toyoda at the Japan National Press Club, who said that the EVs are positioned for short-distance travel, and fuel cell vehicles for longer ranges.

The report also said that during a presentation at a symposium at the California Air Resources Board (ARB), Tatsuaki Yokoyama of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America said that the company aims to reduce the cost of fuel cell vehicles to one-tenth of the current level in 2015, through design and materials improvement, and scales of economy resulting from increasing mass production.
