Tokyo, Japan – The Toyota Prius was the top-selling passenger car in Japan in 2009, according to a report by the Green Car Congress.
The data was derived from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. The figure does not include mini-cars or imported cars.
The Prius held the top monthly sales spot with May and sold 208,876 units in Japan in 2009, taking 5.3 per cent of total sales of standard, compact and mini-cars. In the U.S., the Prius sold 139,682 copies in 2009.
The Honda Fit took the second-place spot in Japan, selling 157,324 units. It was followed by the Toyota Vitz, at 117,655 cars; the Toyota Passo at 98,883; and the Honda Insight at 93,283 units.
