Laval, Quebec – Transit buses in Laval, Quebec will cost $1.00 today, Tuesday July 7, due to a smog warning from Environment Canada. The Société de transport de Laval (STL) has committed to reducing fares to $1.00 per person on days when smog alerts are declared.
The reduced fare was also in effect on July 5 and 6 due to smog alerts, which prompted some 1,400 more people to use the transit on Monday, up 5.6 per cent over the average number of trips for a Monday during this time of year.
Launched in 2008, the Smog Alert initiative is intended to promote the use of public transit when the air quality deteriorates to below acceptable standards. The initiative ends on September 6, 2010.
