Yokohama, Japan – Nissan Motor Company has formed a new joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation, intended to conduct research on the second-life use of lithium-ion batteries that have previously been used in electric cars. 

The company, called 4R Energy, will focus on reusing, reselling, refabricating and recycling lithium-ion batteries that are no longer suitable for use in vehicles.

As part of the new business development, the company will conduct demonstration tests and undertake a commercialization study.
