Tokyo, Japan – Mitsubishi Electric has developed what it says is the world’s smallest and lightest motor controller unit for electric power steering. The new unit is half as large and 70 per cent lighter compared to the company’s current products, but produces equal output, and has the motor and controller integrated into a single unit.
The new motor also has upgraded steering assistance capabilities due to a 30 per cent improvement of the electromagnetic design and coil density. Mitsubishi Electric will provide the product to automobile and steering manufacturers in the near future.
Mitsubishi said that 40 per cent of new automobiles manufactured worldwide now use electric power steering, which can reduce fuel consumption by three to five per cent when compared with hydraulic steering units.
