Laval, Quebec – A program in Laval, Quebec that reduces transit fares during smog alerts recorded a 7.1 per cent increase in ridership during a week of alerts, recording 15,564 more transit trips than the estimated number.

During the alerts, which ran Monday, July 5 to Friday, July 9, the Société de transport de Laval (STL) dropped fares to $1.00. The company said that the increase in ridership was equivalent to a reduction of at least 27.7 metric tons of greenhouse gases discharged into the atmosphere.

The program lasts until September 6 and fare reductions will go into effect until then if smog alerts are announced.
