Halewood, Merseyside, England – Land Rover has produced the first official Freelander 2 TD4_e, which uses a Stop-Start system to shut off the engine at idle and reduce emissions. The company said it is the world’s first SUV to feature an intelligent Stop-Start system.
The first model is destined for a customer in Spain. The company has not announced plans to bring the system to North America.
During a standard cycle, the CO2 emissions of the vehicle are reduced by eight per cent, compared with the outgoing manual diesel Freelander 2. In real-world tests, Land Rover engineers have measured fuel savings approaching 20 per cent in heavy urban traffic.
“The Stop-Start Freelander 2 is the first production vehicle to benefit from the massive £800 million investment in sustainable technologies by Jaguar and Land Rover,” said managing director Phil Popham. “The Stop-Start feature will be included as standard on all Freelander 2TD4 manual models, with no associated increase in list prices.”
