Namyang, Korea – Hyundai has unveiled its first direct-injection gasoline engine, which is expected to first appear in the redesigned Sonata in the first half of 2010.
The company unveiled the 2.4-litre Theta II GDI at the ninth annual Hyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference, attended by engineers from Europe, Japan, the U.S. and Korea.
Direction injection lowers emissions while raising power output and improving fuel economy; prior to its inception, a gain in one area came at the expense of the other two.
The company said that GDI application will subsequently be expanded across its gasoline engine family and applied to other Hyundai models.
