Carson, California – Toyota will have two electric car prototypes by the end of July, the result of its alliance with Tesla Motors. The news was confirmed by Carson Toyota, one of the company’s largest dealers.
In May, Toyota announced that it would invest US$50 million in Tesla shares and the automakers would jointly develop electric car models. The prototypes will be modified Toyota vehicles.
Toyota’s partnership with Tesla is the first of more such alliances that the company wants to pursue in advanced auto technologies, company president Akio Toyoda told reporters in Japan. Toyota plans to lead the way in developing vehicles that consume little or no petroleum, and produce fewer emissions.
