New York, New York – U.S. electric car company ZAP has signed a distribution agreement with lithium battery and vehicle manufacturer Advanced Battery Technologies (ABAT) through its subsidiary Wuxi Zhongqiang Autocycle. ZAP said the agreement will accelerate production of more powerful vehicles with longer range through ABAT’s large-format polymer lithium-ion battery technology.
ABAT’s batteries will play an important role in vehicles such as ZAP’s XL/XR extended-range pickup truck and Shuttle/XR van, as well as the freeway-capable Alias roadster. ZAP is finalizing plans to build these types of vehicles and others in the United States.
“This agreement will further the availability of affordable lithium battery powered vehicles,” said Steve Schneider, CEO of ZAP. “By combining our strengths, we believe ZAP and ABAT can expand the use of electric vehicles in many niches.”
ZAP expects that its Zappy3 line of scooters will be the first vehicles to incorporate the new battery technology. The companies also expect to cooperate on additional electric vehicle development and distribution, and expect to make joint announcements in the near future about a marriage of ABAT’s battery technology and ZAP’s wheel motor technology designs. ZAP already mass-produces wheel motors for its Zappy3 and Zapino vehicles and said it is “well down the development path of similar but more powerful designs for traditional, four-wheeled products as well.”
