New York, New York – The finalists for the 2009 World Car Awards have been named. The winners will be announced at the New York International Auto Show on April 9, 2009.

From an initial entry list of 51 new vehicles from around the world, and then a shortlist of ten finalists, the top three contenders are the Ford Fiesta, Toyota iQ, and Volkswagen Golf VI.

To be eligible, a contender had to be in production, and sold, on at least two continents during 2008. The vehicles were selected and voted on by an international panel of 59 automotive journalists from 25 countries.

The ceremony will also name the winners for three other awards. Finalists for the 2009 World Performance Car Award are the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 Carrera; the finalists for the 2009 World Green Car are the Honda FCX Clarity, Mitsubishi iMiEV and Toyota iQ; and the finalists for the 2009 World Car Design of the Year are the Citroen C5 sedan/C5 tourer, Fiat 500, and Jaguar XF.

The awards are now in their sixth year.
