Rome, Italy – Walter de Silva, head of Volkswagen Design, has won the Compasso d’Oro award for his lifetime achievements. The award, presented by the Italian Association of Industrial Design (ADI), is considered one of the most renowned Italian design prizes.
The international panel of judges described de Silva as an “undisputed protagonist of Italian design” and gave him the award for his 40-year career. The award honours Italian and international personalities and their services in design, research, teaching, production and distribution.
The prize has been awarded 22 times since 1954 and this year marked the 150th anniversary celebration of Italian unification.
The head of Volkswagen Design since 2007, de Silva has received several design awards, including the 2010 Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany, the country’s highest official design award, for the Audi A5.
