Reports of a possible Prius-fighter from Ford are gathering ground this week after numerous websites cited “Ford sources” that a vehicle codenamed C240 will be a dedicated hybrid based on the same platform as the Ford Focus.

Despite being hybrid-only here in North America, the C-Max is actually an adapted conventional engine vehicle. This would be Ford’s first truly dedicated hybrid rig and would be placed to compete directly with the iconic Toyota Prius.

Being based on the C2 platform that underpins the Focus and Escape we can expect the C240 to have similar dimensions to the conventional Prius. There are no indications yet that Ford will also produce a Prius C or Prius V competitor.

Given the model is projected for a 2019 launch it seems likely it will be a plug-in hybrid along the lines of the C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi.
