Currently in the COO position, Fields is a Ford lifer

As speculated in the past, current Ford chief operating officer Mark Fields is expected to be announced as the company’s next CEO when the post is vacated later this year by Alan Mulally.

Bloomberg reports the automaker will announce the appointment later this year when Mulally retires from the company, according to two sources. The announcement could be made as soon as May 1.

In stark contrast to Mulally, Fields, 53, has been with the company in one form or another for 25 years, previously heading Mazda North America and Ford’s former Premier Auto Group that included Lincoln, Volvo, Aston Martin, Land Rover, and Jaguar.
