Carrera 4 with taller off-road suspension, larger tires rumoured for Beijing auto show in April

It seems a refresh isn’t the only thing Porsche is planning with the new 911 in 2016. It’s being rumoured there could be an off-road capable model joining the lineup, set to debut as a concept at the Beijing auto show in April.

Tipped to be named 911 Safari, the concept will be based on the Carrera 4 with all-wheel drive, but get additional taller off-road suspension and durability kit, such as skid plates and larger tires.

This isn’t the first time a Porsche will wear the Safari moniker for an off-road model. A Porsche 911 SC Safari contested the East African Safari Rally in 1978. Later, in 1983, Porsche began competing in the Paris-Dakar Rally with three Carrera 4×4 coupes and 1985 seeing the introduction of the infamous 959 supercar for the rally.

The refresh of the 911 is also set to bring a new family of smaller, turbocharged engines to the sportscar line.
