New York, New York – The all-new Volkswagen Golf was named the 2009 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show today.
A jury comprised of fifty-nine international automotive journalists from twenty-five countries around the world chose the sixth generation Volkswagen Golf for this prestigious global award, topping the other finalists, the Toyota iQ and the Ford Fiesta.
“We are very honoured by this award acknowledging our best selling model worldwide,” said John White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. “This award provides a tremendous boost for our upcoming introduction of the new Golf this fall to the Canadian market along with the new GTI and Golf Wagon.”
The sixth generation Golf first debuted at the Paris Motor Show last fall, and made its North American debut at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto this February. The new Golf will be available in across Canada this fall as a 2010 model, and TDI diesel models will be available early next year.
