Lexus IS will drop 2.5-litre V6 for blown four banger and get new name

Lexus has been pretty honest about their new 2.0-litre turbocharged mill premiering in the NX crossover. Producing 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, the new engine has similar output to comparable BMW and Mercedes-Benz 2.0-litre turbo units, and the Japanese luxury automaker wants it to appear in more vehicles than just the NX.

The old 2.5-litre V6 currently doing duty in the Lexus IS sport sedan doesn’t provide much in the way of excitement. And Motor Trend is reporting the six-cylinder may not long for this world.

According to MT, the Lexus IS will be the second model to receive the new 2.0-litre turbo engine after the new NX. Along with the new engine will probably come a change in model nomenclature, such as IS200 or IS300 if the old 2.5-litre sticks around as a base model.

All we know is the new engine will make the Lexus IS much more competitive in a segment full of blown four-cylinder luxury cars. For those of us not looking to shell out F Sport levels of cash, it could give us some affordable RWD fun without breaking the bank.
