New aluminum construction could make repairs tricky, says Automotive Service Association chairman

With the impending all-aluminum bodied F-150 to debut later this year, many believe consumers will see a spike in insurance rates commensurate with increased repair costs.

Darrell Amberson, chairman of the Automotive Service Association, cited less than 10-percent of independent body shops are equipped to do body work on aluminum-shelled vehicles, as aluminum has typically been used on higher-end and niche vehicles in the past.

Ford themselves figure a 10-percent increase in insurance prices will be typical and 90-percent of prospective customers live within two hours of a capable body shop. They also state due to the thicker gauge metal used for the body, the new F-150 will be more resistant to smaller body issues such as light-contact dents.
