Oshawa, Ontario – General Motors will recall 256,583 cars to replace a motor in the power steering system. The recall affects the 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, and 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit.
The voluntary recall was announced after an investigation concluded that greater steering effort may be required at speeds under 24 km/h. GM said that while the vehicles are safe to drive because they can still be steered, the measure is being taken out of concern for customers.
If the condition occurs, a chime will sound and a “Power Steering” message will be displayed in the instrument cluster. The condition takes time to develop and tends to occur in older models out of warranty.
Plans for a remedy are being developed and customers will be informed when the plan is finalized.
