First passenger knee airbag packaged inside glovebox door

The upcoming Mustang is adding a few pounds over its predecessor when it arrives later this year, and this might be one of the reasons, even if it is fairly lightweight. Ford will be the first automaker to package a front passenger knee airbag in the glovebox door.

Knee protecting airbags are nothing new and a number of new vehicles have them equipped on the driver side. This design for the front passenger is said to be a “smaller, lighter package” making for more room for occupants.

“We provide a high level of safety, quality and design for our customers and their passengers,” said Sean West, Ford restraints manager.

“With this innovative airbag design, we have developed technology that provides protection for vehicle occupants while also reducing weight and enabling greater design flexibility.”

The new 2015 Mustang will also be equipped with double the number of airbags of its predecessor, soon totalling eight.
