Nice article, Lesley!  I agree with everything stated, but emphasize that the Accent's biggest competitor is the Rio, which, IMO, does everything better other than maybe exterior styling.  When the Accent is redesigned, I have a feeling it'll absolutely be the value-leader once again.

The Chevy Sonic may have something to say about the "best in class power" comment.

$1050 is a good value, I'd pay that for the sunroof alone.

At that price. I rather a Civic - Focus or Corolla or even for that matter the Elantra at a push.

You list the Chevy Spark as a competitor for this vehicle.  I don't think that's true.  I think, rather, that the Chevy Sonic is the true competitor at this class, and that the Spark slots in one class lower than what most manufacturers offer.  It's more similar in size to an IQ or even a Smart.

I was honestly surprised when I looked up the sales data and saw how well the Accent fares. In my mind, this class of car should be sold on price, or cargo room and this has neither.

Without the cargo flexibility, I would wonder why someone would choose this over a Fit or Versa Note. If price is the issue, the Micra is a really nice option as well.

But there the Accent sits in 18th spot in 2014 sales in Canada with the Fit, Versa, and Micra all well behind. Clearly I'm wrong!

Yeah I always say if you need a camera/sensor/computer to park your vehicle, you shouldn't be driving it.

I disagree with some of the larger vehicles. It's not necessary to park, but small children in parking lots, etc, it'll be very helpful. The Odyssey has one and while I don't need the sensors, it's mighty helpful to park in the garage with, and reduces stress while backing out of lots in supermarkets, etc.

On an accent, though, it seems silly.

On a minivan, truck or SUV....ok, I see a sense to it....on a car this tiny, hell no.

In Quebec, B-segment (subcompacts) was up 7.5% in 2014, C-segment (compacts) still covered 1 sale out of 2, midsize cars, already "niche", lost 14.5% market share, eaten up by compact SUVs. I'm betting the improved small cars (Fiesta, Accent, Rio) are responsible for the increased sales in this segment.

Fob won't get it, but I've heard many co-workers complain that the Civic and Mazda3 are "huge" cars. A lot of people are turning to cars such as the Accent, and midsize buyers are getting compacts.

The Spark is Fiat 500-sized. It's A-segment!! The Sonic belongs on the competitor list here.

Oh, and I had a 1982 Mazda GLC winter beater during college. Thing generated no heat at all, but at 225$ before taxes, it was forgiven.

"Huge cars".....are they coming from a scooter or a Peel P50?!?!?!?

In Montreal, perspectives change. Tight on-street parking, 2.95m traffic "lanes" and underground garages designed for, indeed, Peel P50's mean anything larger than compact becomes a liability. My Sentra saved me considerable time in traffic, squeezing between FedEx trucks and buildings on one-way streets where my van would not have gone through. I get that, small cars are better for Montreal, but calling a 3 or Civic "huge" is ridiculous. Theyre not that much bigger than an Accent.

The Civic now is at least as large as an early 1990s Accord. If that was considered mid-sized at the time, why not now?

I like small cars, and since I'm not hauling around many people or things currently, I'd be tempted by a Fiesta ST, or Fiat Abarth, regardless of whether or not I could get something larger for the same money.
