16 year old first car
« on: January 10, 2015, 11:25:01 pm »
Hello everyone.
So I'm 16 and will be getting my g2 licence in June. Because of this, I'm thinking about purchasing my first car. I'm looking for a 4 door sedan, small type car. My budget is $4000. What car is reliable, low insuranced, good looking and good on a gas? Thanks

$4k is a bit sketchy no matter what. Find a mechanically inclined friend to come along.

Hi. Depending on where you are insurance premiums can hurt more than cost of gas. Generally speaking sedans that young ppl want to drive are more expensive to insure than a large "grandpa" type sedan. It's all about accident costs that derive from general driving habits of various age (and gender) groups.

Even in Alberta, you can get a pretty decent car for $4K.  Something along these lines...

The Mazda Protege5 is cheaper than a Honda / Toyota, sporty looks and decent handling. Fairly reliable, do have rust issues at the rear wheel wells tho.

You can probably find a 2004 Mazda3 at that price...a rusty one.

In all honesty?

Save your money. You really don't need a car right now. While it does make you cool, what you DO need to do is save money; if you intend on going to post secondary, you will need every cent you can get to afford everything. I would say only after post secondary should you consider a car; most universities and colleges do have bus pass programs set up so you can ride transit at a reduced rate, or included in your tuition.

But if you insist, I would say a good condition Ford Fusion (you are looking at a 2006 model). Roomy, reliable, and fairly safe.

Welcome willg48, hopefully you will find us helpful.

With a bit of searching, there can be something out there that will tweak your interest.

These are some examples that are available on the west coast, where prices tend to be a bit higher for used cars:

As you can see, lots of variety.  I rather like that Volvo myself.  Good luck!

Stay away from the V6 Volvo bricks. The four cylinders are much better and hardly down on power.

If your going to buy and older cheap car I would shy away from Volkswagens and Volvos. They will tend to cost you more in repairs. Older Mazda's while good cars (I have one) are very prone to serious rust.

On a budget I find Hyundai Accents offer very good value. They are not a type a car to get your blood racing but they are comfortable and reliable. The price are really good.

My brother has been driving my mother's old 2000 accent for years now and it has been great.

Take your time and look for a good one. No re-paints, original owner, private sale, low kms. Do not overlook condition of tires. New tires can set you back on a limited budget. Get it inspected by a local mechanic.

On kigigi Montreal there are 122 of them 2006 or newer in your price range. 17 of those have less than 100,000 kms.

Good luck.
If you want more in life you have to make an effort.

Yeah I'm looking for an automatic that doesn't need constant repairs(looked at bmw's but I'd get screwed over with repairs). But I'll keep my eyes open. If anyone has any other solid types of cars keep posting

If you expect to get and exotic or cool car for $4000 your going to buy nothing but trouble. The only way 4K will get you something decent is to buy a plain jane car where you get the best bang for your buck. Getting something exciting will cost you more in long run.

With 4 k in your pocket take BMW off your list unless you have dad's bank account to keep it going.

Think Accent, Elantra, Yaris, Corolla, Versa not Camaro, Audi, BMW, Charger.

I was 16 once and know what you want but will cost you.
