Test Drive: 2013 Lexus LX 570
« on: April 23, 2013, 06:31:06 am »

The Lexus LX 570 is luxurious and capable, but fails to capture the imagination or deliver on as much practicality as its size would suggest.

I can't imagine many people choosing this over a Range Rover or even a Mercedes GL.

It would probably do better in Canada if it was offered as the Land Cruiser.  I donīt know, do we need the Sequoia as well?

For a 100k vehicle, the LX does ok in the USA. Sells 20 times more than in Canada... Man we are cheap....or smarter... ;D

So how much do you think one has to make before $100k family hauler is a realistic purchase?  Even a $500k salary which is roughly $250k after taxes, means $150k after buying this quickly depreciating truck.  Making $200k puts one in the top 1% of earners in Canada, and there's no way that's enough to buy a $100k vehicle.

If everything were balanced, you're right - the gross salary to 'afford' an LX570 would be sky-high. The thing is I think quite a few people cut out expenses elsewhere in their lives in order to have a nice car. It's not uncommon to see people forego nice houses, vacations or entertainment in order to drive an expensive car - I guess it all depends on priorities. If you rent a basement apartment, that's a lot of extra cash that could go towards a snazzy ride. Not my way of doing things, but it certainly works for some people.

This is why people have car loans of 3-7 years and mortgages on their houses of 25 years.   You pay for the expensive stuff with future income.

Does Lexus still sell the GX?  I've never really understood the difference between the two vehicles - the LX is based on the Land Cruiser, and the GX is (was?) based on the Sequoia, right?  And is the Sequoia built off the Tundra platform?  Does the Land Cruiser/LX have its own unique platform?  The LX is more expensive than the GX, but isn't the powertrain the same for both (5.7L with 6-speed)?  So where are the significant differences? Size? Content? Off-road ability?

If you're paying 50% of your $500k income in taxes then you should find a new financial advisor and accountant because there are a lot of ways you can spread that kind of dough to reduce your taxable income.

Why is ok for a Land/Range Rover to go off road and "scuff" its luxury barge sides, but not a Lexus? Is branding really that prolific even within the halls of auto journalism? I mean the author even acknowlegded it is a Land Cruiser but fluffed off a desire to go off-road. What is so much more inspiring in a Land/Range Rover to go off-road but not the Lexus?

Because a Land Cruiser is cheaper than a Lexus LX, if Toyota even offered it here...

The Land Cruiser/LX570 has its own platform. The GX is not related to the Sequoia; rather, it and the Toyota 4Runner are based on the smaller Land Cruiser Prado platform. It uses the 4.6 litre V8, not the 5.7. The LX570 is significantly larger than the GX460.

No doubt about it. All comes down to priorities. Let's not forget that a lot of people lease their automobiles which can make luxury cars affordable or at least more attainable to the middle class . I'm not sure on the exact statistic for Canada but I know it's reasonably high. AND some of my friends are able to "right-off" their luxury leases as business owners. At any rate, this vehicle is very costly and even more so when you factor in depreciation.

Land Cruiser is LX570 in Canada. All 3 share the same platform with 4Runner. So they are both dressed up 4Runner. Besides Land Cruser is not sold in Canada

I still don't understand the stigma associated with platform sharing....as if we expect manufacturers to develop a bespoke platform for EVERY CAR.
