04' TSX Maintenance at 240km
« on: March 28, 2015, 04:43:45 pm »
So the TSX is at 240,000 km and I was wondering what preventative maintenance (mechanical parts) I should do at this point. The fluids have been changed at their proper intervals.

-Spark plugs have been changed once at around 150km
-Serpentine belt was changed once (forget at what mileage, but the original had cracks)

The 2.4L has a timing chain so no timing belt to worry about. How about the water pump?  ??? I have read if there are no leaks or noises coming from it, its OK to keep on going, but people have also religiously changed them at ~160 km.

The car runs great and I intend to keep it for at least another year.

I would not do anything if you just plan on keeping it for another year.

Shocks and struts (or is TSX still double wishbone?) must surely have been replaced already? If not, they've got to be worn out by this point. But I guess if you haven't noticed, then may as well just stick it out for another year.

Nice car, so if I was thinking to keep it longer term, would definitely do shocks and probably replace suspension bushings just to tighten it up. Should have lots of life left in it.

Tough call on the water pump, catch 22 situation since you are only keeping it for one more year. At least should price out the replacement cost.

I forgot to add that it will eventually be passed on to a family member. The car isn't worth much anymore (roughly $4-5K) so theres no reason to sell/trade it, unless a major catastrophic problem arises.

Front suspension is double-wishbone; rear is multi-link. Control arms, ball joints and rear endlinks were replaced once (150km I think).

Just wondering about the water pump since my dad's 06' 330i just had his fail at 99km  ::) FGC.

Since it stays in the family, should do the water pump change. Unless it goes to a family member you don't like.

How hard is the water pump to access?  On some chain driven engines, it's super simple.  I changed the pump on the Corolla in about 30 min and could have done it quicker had I been determined.  If it's easy, just leave it until it leaks or makes noise.  Then it can be done quickly.

^^I'll look into it on Easter weekend. My mechanic quoted me $200 labour to change it.

Anyways, I did a quick visual inspection on the hood today, and saw this around the engine block:

It looks like I'm gonna need a new valve cover gasket?

Should be okay as long as you didn't leave any old gasket bits in there :P
