Check the traffic reports (680 news/CFRB 1010) to avoid construction zones/accidents.

Travel during off-peak times by leaving earlier to avoid the rush hour if you can help it.

Good article Jil

I use a couple of sites to track my costs in addition to keeping my own log

Fuelly is good because one can see what others are getting in the real world

I have achieved 7.0 L per 100 k with my 3.5 L V6 on trips

http://www.fuelly.com/driver/c2100/intrigue

City driving in the winter is a different story

My summer wheels  I have been as low as 5.6 L per 100 km

The other site I also use is Vancouver Gas prices which is very good for finding loweer prices anywhere in Canada or the USA

I have been using those tips as well as some hypermiling techniques for many years and enjoying the fuel savings. I consistently get better fuel economy than the NRCan numbers.

I've been doing pretty much all those tips for years. Okay, I might go on the occasional spirited run and I probably won't ever stick strictly with the highway speed limit, but aside from that, reducing consumption and emissions in normal driving is a priority.

When appropriate, I turn the engine off at longer stoplights or RR crossings. Not as brilliant as a Stop-Start system, but gets the job done. Of course, I only do this when the conditions are right (full battery, warmed up, not too cold outside....)
