Fantastic car and a nice write up, except for this part:

"And there’s really no other reason to own an M2 than to go to the track, unless you’re a pretentious snob who just wants to be seen with the best there is, whether you know how to use it or not."

The writer comes off as some pretentious auto writer snob with that comment.
I love it when a plan comes together.

I want one.........kind of a pity it doesn't have the new B58 motor but maybe that will change later.
ø cons: Peugeot 308: Yamaha R3 [/URL]

Love this car!  I might add the Mustang GT350 to the list of competitors but then again I'm not a badge snob so a typical BMW buyer probably wouldn't cross shop a Ford.

It really sounds like a great vehicle in pretty much all conditions.  Personally I'd probably end up in a Audi RS3 simply because it'll offer more utility (I'm assuming it'll be a hatch back) and have AWD, but I don't track my vehicles so if that's important to you maybe the M2 is the better choice.

Typical BMW buyer doesn't buy an M2. I would say a car enthusiast would buy an M2, and would for sure cross shop the GT350...I would.

Oh and we all completely forgot about the ATS-V.  That vehicle is pretty epic.  I know it's supposed to be a M3/M4 competitor but the interior space is closer to M2.  Plus the prices are more similar.

Man it might be a tough choice between ATS-V and M2.

well dont BMW, looks like you have a hit

a small measure of satisfaction to make up for the mountain of misery because of all the micro-niche CUV/SUVs you have.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Agreed. The BMW snobs will look down on the M2 in the same way that Porsche snobs would prefer to be seen in a 911 rather than a Cayman. The M2 is likely to attract true enthusiasts, since it seems to be the most pared down.

You mean all the products that pay the bills and make niche offerings like the M2 possible?

The US M2 has an optional Executive Package that includes a heated steering wheel, rear view camera, park distance control, auto high beams, and a couple other things. Is this stuff standard in Canada?

That's what I was going to say. Porsche is the same way with the Cayenne and Macan.......which pay the development bills for their sports coupés.

do i want one more than Mustang GT350?   hmmm... tough question. i think i would sleep better with the Ford...
possibly be happier driving the M2... but DEFINITELY sleep better with Ford....

That's what drives me nuts about the VW group. They could have Audi and VW paying the bills with CUVs and have kept Porsche as a sportscar brand. But nope, gotta leverage the :censor: out of the branding.

I hate it.

At least BMW only has the one brand, if you don't count Roller, so it's a bit more justifiable for them.

VW doesn't make money. Their fixed and labour costs are too high. They may be high volume but between the rigid corporate structure and 70-80k people they employ in Wolfsburg alone, VW's profit margins are the slimmest within VW Groupe.

Audi and Porsche have more autonomy and flexibility and hence it shows in their relative successes.

They messed up by not cranking out more CUVs for the US market much sooner. Those (and pickups for the US brands) are where the other manufacturers make their largest profits.

totally agree. a sporty brand such as Porsche and BMW should not sully their lines with glorified baby-strollers - leave that to the other brands in the group [VW etc.]

as capable as a Macan will ever be, or as fast as a Cayenne will be, they will never, ever be a proper Porsche

and BMW - ultimate driving machine? not anymore except for some gems such as this one, now  BMW is the ultimate suburban runabout for upper middle classers with a kid

love their effort for the M2 though, reminds me of en E36 in size and power - me likey
