Jeff Bridges played Rooster Cogburn better than the Duke did  :o  :fall: and Hailee Steinfeld was brilliant.

Indeed on both accounts - and getting rid of the underage sex bit was good.  Though I know it would have been true in the 1800's, it's not really needed in the latest version.

Watched "The Longest Ride" late last night.  Was very impressed with it and thought it was a great story (or should I say stories as it was kind of a two in one).  One of the better movies I've seen in awhile.  It's incredible how much Scott Eastwood looks like his Dad when he was younger.  I'd love to see Scott start playing in some old school spaghetti westerns with Clint directing it......so much win.  On a side note, it was good to see Alan Alda in this movie as well.

Why is your review accompanied by a picture of KDS2K in his new wheels?   :rofl2:

Day off yesterday, watched 'The Admiral: Roaring Currents' on a whim. Fascinating and pretty kick ass look at one of the turning points of Korea's history, especially the second half (pays to Google a bit of history to decipher the first bit).

On Netflix, but a good review here:

Saw Straight Outta Compton tonight. Great movie. It's quite long (nearly 2.5 hours) but didn't feel that way.

It's excellent.  I went expecting so-so, and came out "YEAH!"

Saw Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation on the weekend. I'm pretty jaded when it comes to these types of movies so I just give it a meh. It was enjoyable to watch though - well polished.

I do have to hand it to Tom Cruise though. For as big of a star he is and for being in so many movies, I rarely find myself watching "Tom Cruise." I thought of this because all through the movie I kept thinking, "I didn't remember Jeremy Renner being in the MI franchise .... wasn't he in the Bourne franchise .... and The Avengers ....."  ;D

I saw "Ex Machina" last night.  It was brilliant.

Serious, thoughtful and oh so stylish, it offers a fresh take on the whole AI question and its ramifications.  The movie itself resembles a stage play to me in that it revolves around four characters, all in a single setting.  Almost the entire movie takes place indoors, inside a rather unique house.  The place resembles a plexiglass prison, which for some of the characters, is quite literally the truth.  Made me think of more than a few scenes from various Stanley Kubrick films.

Same here!  I actually said, out loud:  "I feel like I'm watching The Shining."  Same claustrophobic feeling, and sense of foreboding.  2001:  A Space Odyssey also came to mind.  Very smart movie that raises more than a few questions about AI.

Saw the Australian movie Tracks the other night, with a wonderful performance from Mia Wasikowska. Some of the stuff she does with the animals is just unbelievable. Great outback cinematography, too.

It's amazing to think that this very good film did so poorly in theaters ($12,000,000 cost vs box office of $4,000,000).

I do wonder if the Americans stifle smaller 'foreign' films like Tracks in favour of their own copycat Hollywood productions. In this case, Wild, which came out six months later, seems to have similar themes (not that I've seen that one).  :foil:

:iagree: Good, but meh...I don't know what I was expecting.  It wasn't bad, just not sure I'd ever need to see it again.  Whereas I've watched the first 3 Bourne movies more than once.

Maybe it's a product of getting old...???  I saw the last half of The Hundred Foot Journey on the dish, and that I actually liked. Enough I want to see the front half. Yup...facking old...

Watching it now -- great film; it's making me want to pack it all in and go work at a good acquaintance's hotel on the Montenegrin coast for the rest of my life...  (My version of getting away from all of the crap that has gone down over the past couple of years...)

Rosamund Pike was scary good in Gone Girl, and Affleck showed again that with a good script he is good.

Wife and I enjoyed it too. We liked the contrast in the various sections of the film (1st vs 2nd and 3rd acts).

On a completely different style, the boy and I finished up watching "Green Lantern: The Animated Series (2011)" for the second time. I'm still impressed (granted it doesn't take much sometimes  :rofl2: ).

Just watched Wet Hot American Summer for the first time. Not quite sure what to think though it is interesting seeing a bunch of actors together at the very beginning of their careers.

I watched the first fifteen minutes or so.  Does it get better?
