Quality starts with a "Q".  I think it's a good move.

Good to hear that they are bring back the Q.  They've needed a flagship sedan for a few years now.

Ummm, they are not. ;)  You need to read it more carefully; they are renaming EVERY vehicle with a Q.

G Sedan = Q50
G Coupe = Q60
M Sedan = Q70

EX 35 CUV = QX50
FX 35/50 CUV = QX60
JX 35 CUV = QX70
QX 56 CUV = QX80

I wonder how they'll handle the sub-model designations with the various power plants.   It's a shame,  they were one of the few manufacturers that had a nomenclature consistent with the engine displacement.

Not digging the new nomenclature at all.  Kind of like Lincoln's MK-whatever - harder to keep track of what's what - particularly since the public will have to unlearn the Infiniti model descriptions with which they are well familiar.

Agree, I'm not a fan of it either.  I'm not sure I'll get used to calling a G37 a Q50.   It's automatically going to make me think of the Q56.  I think that they should of left well enough alone.

Look at my 2014 QX50!

Is it like my 2011 QX56?

I hate it. Just random alphanumerics. At least as dumb as the Lincoln names. >:(

:rofl2:  Touche, sir.  And Infiniti used to be the Lisa Lionheart of the premium auto world...

I get why they want to have a unified brand nomenclature, but this smacks of marketing gurus running amok.  The G line in particular (and to a lesser extent the FX) have pretty strong brand goodwill, even if they've only been on the market for a decade.

And it's not like the other premium brands rigidly adhere to their model nomenclature (i.e., BMW 3 coupe is now a 4-series...)

So let's see Infinity has Q, BMW has M, MB has AMG, Lexus has L ...this is getting fun if not ridiculous.

Seems like a pretty silly move to me

So the Q80 is what?    an  8.0L V12? ::)

So Infiniti is renaming it’s vehicles so they start with “Q”, apparently in honor of the Q45 one of the biggest flops in automotive history. They should have a chat with the folks at Acura. Ask them how renaming the very successful Legend the 3.5RL worked out.

I dont get this, G, QX, M was a lot better than this all Q's with a different number attached to them. Silly marketing decision, a "lets do it just because we can" mentality.

This will be a set back especially because the G actually means something to car people and even M in this short time has developed a little equity. I wouldn't mind Q for the flagship but it's confusing using it across the line.

The entire first year (or longer) sales people are going to have to explain what a Q-something used to be to orient the buyer.

I certainly agree with that.  The G is the car that brought Infiniti back into the game 10 years ago and is their staple car.......FFS don't call it something else.  The comments on the G35 forum are all very similar.......that they think it's rather ridiculous.  It won't stop me from purchasing a 4th Infiniti, but I just don't think it's a smart move.

But I guess the relatively new Infiniti CEO that came from Audi wants to copy the Audi type naming convention.

Quote
The renaming is Johan de Nysschen’s first big, visible move since taking the CEO spot at Infiniti in July. Lured from Audi, de Nysschen’s charge is to reposition Infiniti from Acura-level purveyor of leathery Nissans to a global luxury brand that can rake in money from beyond the borders of NAFTA

Sounds more like Volvo to me.
