Ford Escapes and Mazda Tributes?

I've been considering an older Escape or Tribute myself.

2.3L MZR or 3.0L Duratec? Both engines are good, I'd be leery about the automatic transmissions though. Manual = good to go.

Duratec! Easier to maintain and bigger availability of parts.

My father in-law has had 3 Escapes.  Every time Ford brings out the new generation, he buys it the 2nd model year.  First two were the V6 autos. IIRC, the last one he traded in at around 160k.  I posted before, that he traded it in without telling me.  Because I would have bought it.  Just regular maintenance.  No rust.  But it was only 6 years old.

A very affordable used buy.  One of things I don't like, is the braking distance, worst in segment.  Guess better brakes could fix that?

The duratec V6 is a solid engine.  Been around for a long time, and worked great in my Mazda6.  Can't really comment on the transmission, as there was a 4 speed in the first gen.  And two different 6 speed ones in the second gen, joint venture with GM, in tons of their vehicles (fusion)

Another vehicle?  Is there a year you don't buy a vehicle?  ;)

I didn't buy a vehicle in between 2004 and 2006, and 2011.

I am barring myself from browsing classified ads though.

Could you get a V6 with a manual transmission for the Escape or Tribute?

He said he the parts were cheaply made , compared to other cars he has worked on
He said this is going to be his last Ford
It had to have towed from Oshawa to home , about 70km , he is happy he had CAA

The Missus thinks this is a bad plan.  "Will you be able to just walk away if something goes wrong?  You'll want to fix it!"

She of little faith!!

This isn't an Escape. This is just a Tribute.  ;D

Are these things any good?  They sure are CHEAP in the used market.  As the missus still likes to use the Forester on deep days in the winter, we're kinda considering buying the kid an el-cheapo car.  Easy to find a good Echo or Corolla that makes a lot of sense, but was thinking about a CUV kinda thing, and wow, can you get a lot of Escape for next to nothing.

Is it because they're junk? Or just 'cause they're not Toyota/Honda and also have large volumes meaning a lot of competition in the used market?

Supply and demand goes into the cost definitely as both vehicles are plentiful. What year of the Escape are you referring to specifically? The older design or the new body? I know a few buds who still have the old style and runs like a dream.

We're looking at ones that are $3K-ish.  Seems to be lots to choose from in that price range.  The budget would cover a 2004-2006 Escape, or a newer but higher mileage Yaris or a REALLY OLD RAV/CR-V.

We have some friends selling their 2002 Highlander that is in pretty much PERFECT condition save for the 320K on the odo.  They're thinking $3000 or so - kicker?  IT'S GOLD...

Lower milage but older model for the Escape wouldn't be a bad idea. I've seen plenty of older models still running strong ! You should consider checking it out if the aesthetics are to your liking and the pricing seems to fit your smaller budget.
