I imagine like any major city Detroit does have some great festivals, places to eat and things to do. You just have to know where they are.

No.  Not in Detroit proper, really.  Apart from right down at the park at the water,

They are trying...but mostly in the blocks adjacent to the casinos and the sports arenas/stadiums.

Perhaps in a few decades though.

Why does no one know about DVT here?  Everyone I mention it to has never heard of it, yet it's talked about a lot in Europe, walk around during a flight, less alcohol etc.  Never seen any advice on it over here.

The most common clotting disorder, Factor V, originated in northern Europe (countries north of Italy and Spain).  Consequently, DVTs per capita are higher there and are receive more attention.  Having the knee bent for a long time and dehydration are contributors for ppl that carry one of the 20 plus identified clotting anomalies.  Age is a BIG factor along with varicose veins or general venous insufficiencies.

Nothing...nothing at all.

I remember that scare starting although I already lived here.    Started when people took longer and longer flights on cheap airlines, like holidays in those islands in the Indian Ocean with 12-14 hours stationary in a really tight seat each way.  Planes where there was no room to walk around. IIRC it was never deemed to be a problem on the relatively short Trans-Atlantic trips.

The first DvT I got was after a drive to the Montreal area, the funny part is we actual stop a lot on that trip to look at different place instead of our usually only stop for gas trips

I like the fact that you called Mexico a dump yet you frequent Detroit, which is North Americas Mogadishu

Longest flight I've done has been 18h non-stop to Johannesburg on SAA; survived not too badly but then again, as a child I suffered through worse flights to Asia.

LOL. From a 2010 article: "According to Foreign Affairs Canada, 112 Canadians have been killed in accidents, murders, drownings or suicides since Mexico started an aggressive war against its various drug cartels in Feb. 2006. From that number, 15 Canadians were murdered or died in suspicious deaths."

Canadians make somewhere around 14 million overnight visits to Mexico per year. Your chance of being murdered there might be less than it is at home.

There's actually some pretty cool things happening in Detroit in terms of revitalizing downtown and urban renewal in general. They've got a long ways to go but they're on the right path - will be interesting to see the state of the city in a decade or two.

Last time I was in Mexico, was walking around (off the resort) in Puerto Vallarta & there were bunch of Canadian white haired ladies walking around as well... I turned to my GF & said if they feel safe here, then we're sure as hell safe... cause I can run a hell of lot quicker than they can & throw a punch a lot harder too!!      That said, I did have a little shady guy asking us if we were looking to "party", assumed he probably meant if we were looking to buy drugs or whatever, I politely said "no thanks" and then just kept walking.  Nothing more became of that.  Like Fob has said, a little bit of brain & common sense will keep you safe!  ;D

Walking around Cozumel, Playa, Puerto Morales or Tulum, yeah, never felt unsafe even in the slightest way......I do get asked lots if I want to buy some weed though lol

14 million Canadians visit Mexico per year?  So 1/3 of Canada visits Mexico?  Love to see that source.  Considering Americans numbers are closer to 7 million.

And I don't think for a second that any town or resort is safer in Mexico is than any place in Canada.

Ummmm.... I think you mis-read that.... it's 14 million over night visits, not 14 million people, it's more like 2 million going for 7 nights  ;)

I guess I am more adventerous type perhaps.    :-\

Come with me to Detroit for a night.  We'll put this to the test.

Detroit has absolutely ZERO appeal to me, never has.

The cigar bars are wonderful!

No doubt that they are, but being a pretty seasoned traveler, that's not even close enough of a reason for me to spend my dollars visiting there.

You sayin' Ronnie and I are hicks?

Hahaha, no not at all.   ;D    I'm just saying that there is nothing about Detroit that makes me want to visit there is all.   ;)
