for people who just don't care about their car, drive short distances and haul around some garden gear or what have you.... it's a decent used car.
but only because you should be able to buy it cheap. 2011 and newer at least feel slightly nicer with the upgraded soft(er) touch interior and heated seats found in most models... but it is just a cheap runaround. note that i didn't say inexpensive in this case. cheap is something different.
it has a place in the marketplace... but that place is for people who need midsize car or small suv versatility, want something newish with warranty and are on a tight budget.
basically, if you can... you'd be better off going 2 years older and getting a matrix for the same price.
