Too bad VW doesn't install the block heater as std fare in all cars, as they have a really neat setup vs the tie-wrapped horrors we usually see.

Here's the plug on my Golf:

According to the sales manager, they're phasing out block heaters altogether. I looked around the lot, and none of the new cars were equipped with them. I was judging that by looking for the receptacle on the lower grill.

Ford does the same thing:

Standard plug, sheeech. Too simple. You need a dedicated plug design that no one else uses in the FGC school of design. Along with a special cable, of course.

I noticed after buying the focus there was a $100 bill for a block heater. I was quite annoyed, thinking it didn't have one, but it turns out it does. However, the car is usually garaged.

Maybe I'll use it just to show Sir O how nice it is  :-* .

For some cars you really want the block heater installed at the factory. For example, Edge and Escape block heaters are a $100 option from the factory. We brought in some used units from Vancouver that didn't have block heaters. Service quoted us $1500 to install one after the fact.

Yea.  Dig a hole in the ground and stick it in there.  Park over top.

I thought you were more worry about the car sitting outside at work, the wind in the parking would probably not allow the air to heat up
Can you get a radiant heater ? http://www.schwankgroup.com/products/patio-heaters/supremeschwank/

When I lived in the north it would get COLD.  -55C cold.  I modded my little 76 Civic's battery pan to accept a battery out of a bulldozer, then on top of the standard block heater I added an inline coolant heater and a battery blanket.  I had the luxurious in-car electric heater as well just to help warm the cabin a bit prior to driving away.  I had to use extension cords from three different circuits to run it all.

Short story? Divorce. She's the one who picked it, so it made sense that she keep it. My twelve year old and I had a great road trip through the US to deliver it in the Spring.

I've been pretty happy with the Passat so far. The lack of a block heater was a disappointment as was a minor fuel leak around the fuel rail due to an improperly torqued fitting.

I fully understood the point...I was trying to be funny.  You want a heat source to replace the engine block heater.  A suggestion was made for a 500W bulb to act as a heating source, which was made as a sort of joke in and of itself.  To add to the humour, I suggested that 500W would be too expensive to run all night every night and therefore he should consider LEDs.  Because energy conservation is not the point to be had here (high wattage giving off excess heat), I posted the lava lamp as a hippie way of saying LEDs are better for every purpose (not truly the case).

SirO gets me!
