Test Drive: 2011 Audi R8 Spyder 5.2
« on: October 27, 2010, 04:05:13 am »

Fifteen thousand dollars more than the R8 coupe, the $187,000 Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 features a fabric top that tucks away in 19 seconds, reports Peter Bleakney. Its 525-hp V10 "loves, nay needs, to be wound out," he says.

I remember seeing a silver spyder parked, top down, in a busy part of Montreal back in August, and I remember thinking, 1) how good the car looked, and 2) how careless/ballsy the owner must have been to have left the car unattended with the top down - that is unless the owner was the homeless guy sitting a couple of feet away from the car - i guess it's possible, as I know I'd have to sell my own house to afford it.

Man, I sure find the 5 (now 6) entries in here sad when I compare them to the over 50 (not Ovr50) comments in the CRZ thread.

Ya, ya...not many will own an R8...but I'd argue that not many people want to own a CRZ compared to this thing.  Although this isn't a hydrid, or even a paddle shift...so I might be wrong.   ;)

I've never been a big fan of the blade on the R8 coupes...so the Spyder looks better in my eyes.  And my goodness...does the 911 ever look dated compared to the R8.

I agree.  The R8 is one of the best looking cars on the road.

Car and Driver has a comparo in their most recent issue, including the V10 R8, V12 Vantage, 911 Turbo S, SLS AMG, and 458 Italia.  Its a good read about 5 great cars.  They placed the R8 third behind the 458 and 911 Turbo S, stating that at the limits it understeers, which inspired confidence but slowed its lap time.  I was surprised that it had the slowest lap time, even behind the V12 Vantage, especially considering its mid-pack acceleration times.

Either way, one hell of a great car.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Not surprising really. The CRZzzzzzz can be bought by mere mortals, thus people relate to it- the R8 Spyder only by those with a healthy cheque book. The rest you see driving them are posers that wish they did or the "cousins of the Dealer plate crowd"...the "Automobile Reviewers". ;)

on looks alone, i'd still prefer a 911 turbo cab. Though not as exotic-looking as the R8, i still find it a beautiful car, and way more attractive with the top up than the R8 is with its top up.
