Preview: 2011 Ford Explorer
« on: August 03, 2010, 04:08:33 am »

Ford's "completely re-invented" Ford Explorer, scheduled to debut in late 2010, will be the first unibody Explorer in its 20-year history, and for the first time, will offer an optional turbocharged four cylinder engine, reports contributor Peter Bleakney.

While I think this is a sound move for Ford (the old model was definitely a relic), I just wonder if the world (and if the buyers) need yet another SUV?

I assume this means the death of the SportTrack ?  I do like the looks of the new Explorer though.

Neil - yes, the Sport Trac is no more after the current 2010 model.  Sales have dropped signficantly on that model since it came out in 2001.

I think the most remarkable thing about this redesigned Explorer is the inflatable seat belts. I look forward to hearing more about how these new belts perform in tests and in real-life scenarios. Other than the belts, the new Explorer looks good in pictures and on paper. I look forward to seeing one up close on the road and I hope an Evoque pulls up along side of it so I can compare the two.

I think the world could make do with the SUVs currently available, but that's not Ford's concern. They want to build vehicles that they can sell to the public. If another brand is selling SUVs, then it's only natural that Ford is going to try to make a product that can compete for those sales. Also, I think your question is based on the premise that SUVs are inherently bad. I think gas-guzzling SUVs are bad, which is why it's great to see this class of vehicle become more fuel-efficient and less polluting. I can think of several reasons to own an SUV that don't include a desire to degrade our planet.

Well said AutoAfficionado. If things work out, this beast could be less impactful on the environment than a midsize sedan 5 years ago.

I like what Ford has done with the Explorer and may give it serious consideration when we go vehicle shopping in two or three years time.  Suspect my wife will be impressed too - and she isn't a Ford fan.  Another candidate on my list is the new Jeep GC but on technical merit, manufacturer reputation and first impressions I give the Explorer the edge.

Seems to be a nice vehicle, I'd say its just a next Gen Taurus X especially since its still based on the Taurus.  Ford is just playing the name game again the Explorer is dead as we now it, so lets call the next Gen Taurus X an Explorer since its a name more recognized with Customers.

Not to worry about what to call the Explorer. It's based on the Volvo S80 chassis anyway. Can't be that bad

Toyota already set to cancel four-cylinder 4Runner

Oh yes, obviously a "fail" on Ford's part. ::)
