^^^^Yea really.  Do tell what $70,000 car with ostentatious styling you're talking about, Solstice.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

But its an auto-transmission....

What's your point?  It shifts faster than ANY manual.

No manuals in Ferraris either...do they suck also?
Hey relax, you sound very offended.

Hey I'm not here to judge.
I just like shifting my own gears sometimes.

as there is no M series sedan.

uhhhhhh

EDIT: anyways, personally I appreciate the relative stealthiness of the IS-F. I don't want like a crazy paint stripe or something...subtle changes are best. Audi does it really well.

My mistake, they are not common around here, I see 3 series coupes, that are M badged, and plenty of 5 series that are sedans, but don't think I have seen a relatively new 3 series M sedan.

LOL...not offended.  But I hear that often these days.  Modern high performance autos are VERY good.

I'd rather have a great performing auto than a so-so manual. (blasphemy, I know!)  Drive my 911...you'll be begging for an auto in 5 minutes.   :rofl2:

Id buy an LS460 or a GS350....but for a performance sedan....sorry, the GFC's have it. Oh, and Ill take your clunky 911 5 speed over a slushbox anyday....saying that, the exhaust note on the C63 makes up for the granny gearbox  ;D

Seriously....you wouldn't.  I promise you.

You'd be all over the superb 8 speed tranny in the IS-F like a fat kid on a Smartie.

^^What a great car...!!

Bullet-proof, moddable, fast and handles.

Can't ask for much more.

Depends on what is more important to you... Sure I appreciate Lexus reliability, the V8 performance factor, and handling.  But from the image above, other than the wheels, how does this look any different from a Lexus IS250?
A car more than 1/2 the price!

If I was spending $70k, I would want something that turns makes me turn my head a bit more... This isn't a jab to Lexus, but it's a little more common in the Luxury segment, a little less so with BMW, as there is no M series sedan.

Looks a lot different if you know what a standard IS looks like.  Different hood, fenders, fascia, rockers, bumper, brakes, interior, handbuilt V8, 8 speed transmission, etc. etc. etc..

M3 (and "Ms" in general) didn't look too different from regular BMWs.  Ditto AMG stuff.  All from the same family, and share the family looks.

I do know what a standard IS looks like.  And I am aware of the performance enhancements, and interior differences, as well as price differences.  And I was saying it's not just Lexus that does this...But at least it's not just cosmetic.  Can't stand when it's just minor things, with no performance differences, or interior upgrades, and pay for a badge, there is substance here, just not much flash... But to each their own...

From 20 feet away, many people can't tell the difference, nor can they on the road (is350 vs is-f), on the track is another story....

Hey, I may be a fat kid and I may like Smarties....but I like a clutch and a stickshift.

Every time you shift a 911 of my vintage, you risk costing yourself $10,000.  AKA "The money shift".  The shifter is NOT gated, you can't tell 1st from 5th.  Shifting from 5th to reverse feels like 4th..until the clutch is let out.  In neutral, the stick flops around like a dying fish...there is no auto centering of the stick.  Synchros?  What synchros?  Oh they're there...but they are not like modern synchros and are friction synchros..they need friction to work properly (don't ask.)

Trust me...it's a POS.  Only in your imagination (or some S&M fetish) do you wish you had a 915 gearbox.

Every time I drive the IS300 after the 911, I nearly orgasm.  The only people who say they'd take a 915 over an auto...are people who've never driven a 915.

Anybody decipher what today's obsession is?   :D

Oh! Very nice! My obsession as well! :skid:

Help me out, maybe a Hybrid, FR-S?

It's a 2012 IS-F. Awesome machine.

Yessir.

It makes a really compelling argument to stretch the budget a bit a lot...this one just happens to be at my nearest Lexus dealer... :shuffle:
If I do end up hooked one of these, i'll be fishing in the States first

Why stretch....

Here's a funny story about the shifting on the 911..... :rofl2:

The above map is to scale. So is the shift pattern.

Disclaimer - I like this car. A lot. After a weekend, I can go through gears in this car easier than Elizabeth Taylor went through husbands. Too soon?

Lets take a run through the gears.

Gears one through four are tight together, much like they should be on a four-speed gearbox. Only fifth seems to be in a different orbit. It's like they just stuck fifth gear into a 'box where only four had been before.

So let's look at that map.

First is in Beverly Hills. Nice place. Second is in Rolling Hills Estates. It's a nice place too, but it's going to take a while to get there. Just be patient. Third is all the way the hell back up in Hollywood. Don't worry, if you learned anything from your trip from Beverly Hills down to Rolling Hills, the trip back up should be a lot quicker. Fourth... fourth is in San Pedro. It's next to Rolling Hills Estates, but if you're not careful, you're going wind up back in Rolling Hills Estates and you're gonna have a problem. Rolling Hills and San Pedro are solid three wood apart. And much like the two cities themselves, what you can do in San Pedro, you can't get away with in Rolling Hills.

Now for fifth.

Fifth is in Upland. It's a hell of a long way to go. Much like Upland, the first time you go there, you start to wonder if you've gone too far, only to wind up there after you thought you couldn't possibly go any further east. A little blip of the throttle ensures you drop it into gear without a second thought.

Now comes the hard part.

Our 911's shift linkage is not self centering; once you're in Upland, it wants to stay in Upland. To get it back into fourth takes an act of faith. Upland to San Pedro. Pick the wrong exit and you wind up in Rolling Hills; you're going to pay. This is how I get there. I pull it out of fifth, and throw the lever west until it hits the stop above second. From there, I move it east, barely, until I think I'm over fourth and with a blip, I drop it into gear. Another blip to match the revs I hope are correct and then I let the clutch out and listen. A spike means I've gone to far and I'm in second and I'm going to have explaining to do. No spike means I'm right where I want to be and I just mash the throttle and revel in some flat six sound - I can also breath again.

That also goes for the M cars and AMG cars (especially if the normal cars have the sport package).
