The Wine Thread

I'm a sucker for a bargain, so look forward to the Safeway Liquor flyer in my mailbox every Thursday. There's usually nothing that I like on sale, but every so often I get lucky.

This week it was Torres Gran Coronas. It's a solid wine at $23, but there are lots of good choices at just over $20, so we don't buy it often.

But this week it's on sale for $17, plus another 10% off if you buy six. And I got 77 Air Miles on the purchase, so that's like another $7.70 off (Air Miles are worth about a dime each.)

So after all that, I'm pretty happy to score it for $14.52 a bottle.  :D

^ We get deals here in Ontario too.
I think that wine is about $23 here.  We can buy 6 for $138 and get 12 for $276.  Or 100 for $2,300.
We got it made.

Been a while since I posted an actual wine in this thread because it's been a long time since i've had one that 'had me at hello'  :P

This one is fantastic.  I have had some very nice wines from Washington state (usually much nicer than similarly priced California wines) so when LCBO brings any reds in from Washington i always pay attention.  I think this one is the best i've ever had. A frickin' steal at $20

This is the LCBO link and description:

http://www.lcbo.com/lcbo/product/chateau-ste-michelle-cabernet-sauvignon-2012/269357#.VrVLWVMrJBw

Before you say "Thanks You Rule wEelZ"  here's the problem.  I bought this bottle (not bottles, d'OH!) back in August, so of course is long gone from LCBO.
I will be keeping an eye out for this to appear again.

Railton.. this is similar to the Ca Momi, but a bit softer & medium bodied.  Just plain delicious.

I've got a couple bottles that should really be drunk soon.

Hmm... maybe I'll start with one of these and plan a Valentine's Day
dinner around it.

I've typically been a huge Cab Sav fan and Wolf Blass Gold Label has been my go to wine.  But lately I've really been enjoying some Argentinian Malbecs, particularly Don David.

Sweet... their 2012 Merlot is in the March 19th release.  LCBO hasn't updated the tasting notes yet, but here is link.
I'll be grabbing some of this.

When at CTC South I often purchase a favorite Merlot wine of mine that is no longer distributed at the LCBO under the name Bogel. At under $10 US at Wally World here I find it an excellent buy.
However, on a whim I picked up a bottle of Oak Leaf Merlot  as I had read a bit about it and it competing with 'Trader Vics' version of "Two Buck Chuck". At $3.28 you have to wonder who is making money with these wines, I mean, vinted and bottled in California, glass bottles, corking and everything else including transportation that is a crazy price. The Merlot actually has won a Silver medal at the Hilton Head Wine Fest in 2009. Walmart has the exclusive on this wine, sold no where else. Anyways, I didn't know what to expect with it but I opened the bottle and let  a glass of it breath for 30 minutes and was pleasantly surprised. I've certainly had worse wines for much more money. It's a lot lighter than what I typically would choose but it is incredibly smooth...for $3.28. I liked it enough to buy another bottle. ;D

^ Can't imagine paying that little for a bottle of wine!!  Awesome!!  I'm heading to South Carolina this summer with the family for a week, will have to try this stuff out, will be better than drinking their beer...  :rofl2:

Came across this one at the LCBO in January & it was $4 off a bottle at the time, so I figured I'd give it a try... now it's one of my "go to" ones  ;D

Went shopping at the SAQ for a gift over the weekend and picked up a bunch of bottles for us as well, as were out of most everything.  One of the items was a Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia called 'Smokey Bay', priced at $9.65.

I opened it the other night to serve with a spicy mac & cheese & meat casserole and was pleasantly surprised.  It's a rather light Cab-Sauv and rather thin on the mouth at first.  Then it develops a bit but it stays on the thin side.  Quite smooth overall.

Quite drinkable, especially for under 10 bucks.

I tried Roodeburg 2014/13 (hope I got the name right) No grape designation just red wine. Still mostly Cabernet I think. I liked it and have had a few bottles since. A South African wine that is very similar to J Lohr but half the price at $12 and change. Not quite as good as Lohr but close enough in my estimation. Very close in fact.

Yes, I like Roodeberg a lot too. Used to buy it all the time when it was around $11, but is usually close to $15 here now. There are others I like better at that price, so don't buy Roodeberg much anymore, except when I find it on sale.

Received a note from the artist yesterday on that painting I paid $3 for.
Railton!
            Such fun !
The watercolour you have is not a print but is original.I did not do prints which were the rage in the 8o's
I had a gold GMC Vandura which I slept in and did shows all over Ontario.
In this van I took trips ,such as going to WAWA and north of Superior sketching and photographing .
I also did a canoe trip from Killarney Park ,thus more PINE TREE photos.pines on lonely  islands, lonely  pines on islands etc,
When home in my beautiful sky-lite studio, I painted to my hearts delight -----thus your watercolour.I believe it would be the 80's.
I am still very creative and have a beautiful home and gallery type living room ,so if you would like a visit ,I would love to meet you --by appointment.

^ Nice find Railton!  And pretty great of the artist to reply to you.  Sounds like she was genuinely pleased you reached out to her.

So, I bought a few bottles of the Merlot from this house back a few months ago.   It is nice, but not as good IMO as the Cab Sauv (2013 vintage) that is now out.
You'd be wise to buy some.. or don't - more for me!
