Btw, can you guys get Donairs in many places in Ontario?  It's a Maritime thing, so wasn't sure.  I know that anytime I've been out west, no one even knows what they are.

Very hard to come by out here, and they typically use tzaziki sause, which isn't the same.

The Superstore periodically has Greco Donair donair kits. Close, but not quite the same.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I think of Shawarma as a stack of thin slices of marinated meat on the rotating grill  and Gyros as a mixture of ground meat on the rotating grill.

You can find it in Kingston, there was a spot in Napanee but it folded.

We've got Donairs out west, but I've never been a fan. It's just a spicy blob of mystery meat, like a middle eastern version of spam or bologna. Yuck.

But I love a good shawarma, with real cuts of actual meat (beef or chicken at my favourite place).

It's the same around here and these days I would never order a donair when eating out.  But donair meat is easy to prepare at home and the choice of meat is your own.  We usually use lean ground beef.  A friend of mine is a hunter, but his wife and kids all hate the taste of deer meat, so last few years he's been making donair meat with most of it and now they love the stuff.

Ground venison added to anything seasoned tastes like ground beef...which is why I'm guessing they suddenly like it.  :)

Exactly!  The spice kills any wildness.  Probably the healthiest meat you can eat as well.

Also, some people dislike it because a lot of time it's over cooked and dry because it's soooo lean.

The best use for venison (IMO) is kielbasa/sausages.  I looove it!

Just went to a new Mexican place. OMG, burrito was the best I've ever had. Asked how they did it. Beef slab braised for 18+ hours. Then pulled. Incredible.

It's been around for a while, but just tried this recipe for the first time.  Watermelon, feta and mint salad.  The flavour is stunning!   :D

Vitamix
« Reply #2074 on: July 21, 2016, 06:14:02 pm »
We just bought a Vitamix yesterday. Any tips on operation? Got the 6300, the base version from Costco with the tall mixer but with some presets.

I tried with a smoothie this morning and so far not that impressed, much prefer the less foam my old Ninja produced. On the other hand  the wife is pushing to get an additional wider 48 cup container while it is on sale.

Any tips? Are additional containers worth it to have (kind-of expensive)

To prevent foam, ramp up the speed gradually.  And when done, run it slow again for 10-20 seconds.

We use a Nutribullet.

The preset smoothie mode actually does that, so no joy there. But....tried today with frozen fruit, and it calmed the foam down a lot. Plus the blades actually warm things up with the Vitamix, so it didn't leave me a freezing mix to chug before work.

Threw some fresh Kale in there (part of the idea was to use up this kind of stuff which is pouring out of the garden right now) and it vaporized it, like I hoped.

Good way to bring back the thread.  Hamburger soup doesn't sound fancy enough!  Beef Ale Soup?

Been trying to get the crockpot out, but I have been behind in house duties (due to the problems with appliances).  So just the basics for the family.  Turkey sausage, rice, and green beans tonight.
