I like the Tiguan also and it's a good deal right now but that's mainly due to it being well past its due date.  It's based off the MK5 Golf platform, which is two generations older than your Golf R.  Have you factored in the extra maintenance cost of the Tiguan and the cost for supreme gasoline.

How long until the F150 is paid for?  How many Kms does she use in a year?  Like you said, the truck has retained its value well and waiting till it's paid off would put you in the best possible financial position.  I would think the only reason to get the new vehicle is because you can not afford it anymore.

2 things;  It's not a hot climate and @ sea level so good air density and it's a lease.  Let it knock!

I'd wait for the new Tiguan, which could be here as early as this Fall.. Keeping the F150 longer makes more financial sense as well.. However, I wouldn't expect any deals on the new Tiguan anytime soon.

I'd rather pay the extra to have the most power and best fuel economy.

You missed the point about the cold climate and sea level air density.  There will be negligible difference in power and economy.  Now the same vehicle in Denver Co. @ 80F  91 octane would be a must.

She loves her F-150, it's just that her priorities have changed.   With the new gas tax being introduced and the whole economic climate here being very tenuous, a 3 year SUV lease seems like a good option.

Admittedly I don't have all the numbers, but it seems hard to believe that any savings in downsizing from the truck would actually offset the poor financial move of trading in a perfectly good vehicle that you've financed/owned only 2.5 yrs??

Unless she does 100k per year and is going from an F-150 to a Prius, I am dubious....

And she loves the F-150??  Keep it then!

This.  I would have a hard time believing the math makes any sense.  The monthly depreciation on the F-150 shouldn't be too bad from this point forward.

Suggest the Subaru to diversify away from having all your eggs in that same FGC basket. Especially right now.

But if she must have VW, how about a GTi? Visibility, better mileage, not a SUV so center of gravity isn't all messed up, hatch means great room. And of course you have the 'alternate' toy to play with and compare!  ;D

Why not try going off-script and test drive a Crosstrek. Great little package, feels very large inside, and extremely well priced --- especially if you think that in 27 months you'll be looking back at the F-150 trade-in with remorse ......  ;)

Get the cheapest AWD car or whatever; if you have to, and a light weight trailer. Much better for lumber and bags of cement.
