Best car for a 18 year old
« on: February 06, 2016, 07:38:34 am »
Hey everyone

So my girlfriend's brother has been asking for his own car ever since he turned 18. He wants something fast and stylish (obviously) but the last thing we need is a series of ballistic repairs. We want something reliable, safe, and reasonable.

So far our options include a 2009 Mazda 3, a 2006 Nissan Altima, a 2005 Honda accord, a 2008 Chevy cobalt, and a 2007 Ford fusion

Which one is the best of the bunch?

What about a pick up with a crewcab  ;D
Have you check insurance prices in your area , it maybe a factor in your  decision

I actually thought about that but he doesn't want a pickup :D

Worth mentioning; other options include a 2008 Chevy cobalt and a 2007 Ford fusion.

Yep sure insurance costs are an important factor but not as important as reliability and safety.

Go with something really boring. Like a Ford Escape.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

Ford Fiesta. Fun to drive, row the gearbox to get some speed but not too much for danger, and a hatch shows you're practical.

Young guy 18 years old eh?  Get something really unreliable with a big comfy back seat, or a fold flat hatch area.  ;D

had an almost 18 year old kid and his dad in this week.   Don't say spoiled this kid saved his money working paper-routes and part time jobs.....

Narrowed the Choice between a 2014 Focus Titanium and a BMW 128i 2009.   Dad was pushing the focus.... Drove home the BMW.  I think when you are a seventeen year old male one of the biggest considerations is which car is mostly likely to get you some tail.

Agree.  The Escapes are CHEAP and plentiful and while not RAV/CR-V reliable, they seem to be pretty decent.

Out of the list provided, I'd say Mazda 3 - it's at least somewhat sporty looking for an 18yr old, it's fun to drive, cheap to insure, decent reliability, cheap to repair and they seem to last.

Get a rusty one.  They're dirt cheap and good mechanically.

The Cobalt is the least safe from the group.  Probably least reliable as well.

Not sure why you picked those specific years?

I agree the Fusion is a good value, and reliable (especially that generation).   Not sure why you didn't add the Mazda6. Probably cheaper to insure than a Mazda3, safer, and not much more money.  Plus it will be a little more unique... The 1st generation & 2nd generation Mazda6 are related to the Fusion (shared platform and components)

I owned two Chrysler products with ballast resistors and they never gave me any trouble.
