2004 Highlander vs 2004 X5 RACE!
« on: December 04, 2015, 10:18:11 pm »
About a week ago a friend of mine decided to get a "new" winter beater.  His 1997 Honda CR-V just finally gave out.  Now, he's a lawyer, has a ton of dough, but is pretty cheap.  He went looking for a Highlander or RAV-4, deciding to go Toyota this time.

Somehow during his search he ran across a 2004 BMW X5 3.0.  At about 2/3 of the price of comparable RAVs or Highlanders, he figured it looked like a crazy good bargain.  And at the low price he paid, if something fails completely, he can send it to the yard and start again.

It's a one owner unit, the original owner finally tired of it.  The service/repair bill stack is about the size of a NY City phone-book.

He had in the shop today to have some stuff done (oil change and a couple minor things) and I drove him to pick it up.  It's in gorgeous condition, looks new.  The exterior and interior have worn really well, held up fantastically.  Still looks expensive.  For under $5K, it's stupidly nice.  But of course, I prefer to think of it as a time-bomb.

On the way home we acted like kids and did a couple stop-light drag races and a few roll-ons on the freeway.  To both our surprise, the Highlander WALKED AWAY from the BMW in both instances.  I mean just plain smoked it.  Given the similar specs, I expected them to be neck-neck, but nope, the HL just left the X without difficulty.

Didn't see that coming.

Could be the 1000 lb difference.

Could be the 1000 lb difference.

Yeah, that would do it.

It blows me away that the X5 weighs 4600+ lbs.  That's full size truck territory.

I was also surprised that the 2003 highlander was so light.

The difference is actually 800 lbs, I first used the 2WD 4cyl model.

Still, 3800 lbs is pretty good for the highlander.

Yeah, it's almost exactly 800lbs difference when I check the spec sheets - I was only looking at engine specs before.  They make nearly identical HP, but having to motivate all that extra heft really nukes the X5's performance.

Now I want to find a 4.4 to run against.  It has 355hp, but weighs just shy of 5000lbs!!  But, even with all that mass, it still has a better power:weight than the HL.

As for FGC, I already got a text from him this morning asking me to bring my code reader over as his CEL came on this morning.  A week plus a day he's had it.

Update:  The X5 grenaded it's engine.  It overheated so fast that it is completely done for.  Ka-boom.

Damn.  Only 6 months into ownership.

Do you figure his FGC experiment is over?

He's not very happy with it, that's for sure.

Love his comment:

"Just spent $80 on an AMSOIL oil and filter on the stupid thing - was probably the best part of the car until the engine filled the crankcase with coolant."

The new Forester has swelled to nearly 3700lbs - nearly 500lbs heavier than the Gen 1 version - giving it a power:weight ratio only slightly better than my old Highlander.  In a full-on race, the Forester might have the edge, but when pulling out onto the highway, the difference wasn't noticeable.  The much heavier 4Runner basically had the same power - and was a step behind when getting up to speed in a hurry.

That motor is the well regarded N52 I believe? Thought those things were pretty reliable although perhaps 2004 is too early in the run.

He should pick up a last gen MDX.

He knew to stay away from the V-8, and I believe the 3.0L in 2004 in the M54 - not known for catastrophic failure.  VANOS failure, yes, but not grenading.  His indie tech did say he's seeing more and more cooling system failures on E46 and X5 equipped 3.0 cars - but not usually sudden complete failure.

He doesn't feel too bad  -he paid very little for the car.  The tech offered him about half that amount for it for parts.  The original owner had spent a fortune on all kinds of other stuff - lots of good suspension/etc bits in it.

That's what happens when you drag race a 12 year old FGC I guess.
