doesn't the V6 suffer from sludge issues?....don't remember each generation, but I know it's a serious issue.

The only V-6 Toyota engines with "sludge issues" were the 3.0L engines from around 99-01 that had really long oil change intervals - Toyota went back to 8000km intervals in about 03/04 or so (my 04 3.3L is 8K) and all issues were solved.  All the affected engines are now either repaired or dead.  No 3.0L engines in a RAV anyway.

The 3.3L engines are bullet-proof, but never installed in the RAV.

The later 3.5L engines have an oil supply line that is made of rubber that needs to be updated to a metal unit - again almost all of them have been done - it's rare to find one that hasn't been.  It's an easy repair.

My personal preference in the RAV is the 2001-2005 models as they use the excellent full time AWD system similar to the Highlander - but for most people they're pretty old now.  I'd own one in a heart-beat though if it were in good shape.  That generation of RAV might be the best used CUV around - super reliable with an AWD system rivaling Subarus.  Kinda like having a Forester without the Subaru quirks and headaches.

So I think Escape is really the best option for this price range right?

I'll let my wife try a 2004 or 2005 Rav4 just to make sure that she doesn't like it.

We don't like the korean cars' looks 2010 and below so we won't bother looking at them.. hehe..

The 04/05 RAVs are about the best CUVs you can buy used.  They lack a lot of modern features like bluetooth/blah/blah and backup cameras and other stuff, but mechanically, they're tanks.  I know a few people with over 400K on theirs and they won't consider selling them.  Honestly, I'd rather spend $5K on a mint 05 than get a newer one.  Pocket the money and enjoy a lot of cheap driving.

Ok.  We'll keep those in mind when checking out the Rav4.

BTW, how about the 2008 or 2009 Escape Hybrid?  It costs around that same price.  Should we consider it?

Honestly, for the added complexity, I wouldn't deal with the Hybrid. Stick with a V6.
Lighten up Francis.....

I understand the Escape Hybrid is very reliable but for a LM inexpensive used vehicle, I'm with Fob on this one. The V-6 model uses more fuel but is less expensive to buy and in the long run will probably cost less to run thanks to it's relative simplicity.

That's said, for "hybrid enthusiasts" the Escapes are great used buys in terms of hybrids. But I'd only buy one if I had my heart set on a hybrid.

There is a forum member (TopGun) that had a Hybrid Escape and was really happy with it. Purchased it used and commuted on the 407 each day as a DD. He traded it in though on a Jeep a few years later.

for the low kms you mentioned, i don't think the added complexity is worth it. for short trips, low kms and hopefully trouble free driving, i would want a normally aspirated v6. cost more on fuel, but generally less everywhere else, upfront and down the road.

I know Vmango's folks had one that was extremely reliable.

We've had it for 2-1/2 years, I think about 60k or so.  Apart from a bunch of oil changes we've had to put in a steering rack, front wheel bearings, a battery and a HVAC blower.  I think that's it.

They are decently reliable.  I don't know why the one I posted is so cheap, it seems below market by a bit.
But you never know...

Wow, do Cayennes ever depreciate.  Ouch.  Much worse than other Porsche models.  Even in over-priced Alberta it's easy to find one for $8K.  If $8-10K was "walk away" money for me, I'd think about taking a chance on one.  I'd see first if the local indie I used to use is still in business - no way I'd take it anywhere near the dealer.
