2016 Volkswagen Jetta with the 1.4L TSI mated to a 5-speed provides owners a 28/40 mpgUS city/highway rating. With the all-new 128 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, direct injected and turbocharged 1.5L TSI evo, next year’s 2017 Jetta could offer a 30/44 mpgUS city/highway rating on gasoline almost matching the unavailable 2.0L TDI!

The TDI engine provides substantially more torque, but falls off earlier. Also, are they pairing this engine with a conventional automatic instead of DSG?

Yeah 128HP in a Jetta....no thanks. 

So the trick to amazing fuel consumption from VW's perspective is to massively underpower their cars now?  I can't for the life of me think of a car in this category (Mazda 6, Accord, Sonata, etc.) that has such low numbers.  OK, maybe the Corolla comes close....

44 US_MPG = 5.34 L/100

For those that put fuel economy first, this will be great.

IE: Corolla - 5.7, Civic = 5.7

The Corolla has 4hp more and 20lb-ft less and a lot less low end torque.. If the Jetta is massively underpowered, then what is the Corolla??

The Passat competes with those. The Jetta competes with Focus, Sentra, Mazda3, Civic, Corolla etc

Is this 1.5L engine going to replace the 1.4? Personally, I'd trade some fuel economy for extra power. It's not like the 1.4 is excessively thirsty.

My TDI gets 4.1 at 120 km/h. Probably in the 3's at the legal speed limit. With the "right" software, of course.
