OK cute. So, how long have you had it, what mileage have you put on it and what's broke. Thanks.

Great article.  I think if I was looking at something a bit older to buy and enjoy I would probably be looking for a Acura NSX.  Probably a bit cheaper than the Prosche (but not by much) and is similar with it not losing value during the time you own it.  The big thing that I like most about the NSX is that it's a bit more reliable than the Porsche.  Probably not as much sole though and I think the NSX doesn't offer the same unbostructed view outside or smaller size.

The 993 is easily my favorite of the classic 911s. Even love it in silver, which I usually hate.

10 quarts of oil!  Also not knowing much about older Porsches I never would have guessed this one was air cooled (except maybe for the monster grille on the back).  Ahh... Nothing like the visibility and instant throttle cable of these modern classics.

Also, maybe I've been under a rock, but Laurance Yap is a familiar name I remember reading your Wheels section pieces in the Star back in the day!

Yes, he was a journalist then moved to PR in Porsche the moved to a few other positions within the company.  Moved to other jobs and is between gigs now.  Maybe he's back to writing.

993 and the 964 are on my wish list still as well... love those body lines!!!  Prices are starting to climb thru the roof on these, decent ones are in the $50k US range right now, where as 3yrs ago you could get them in the $30k CDN range.  Will just have to stick with my 951 for now until I can upgrade... or add another one to the collection  ;D

993 Turbos are the best looking 911s ever.  Sadly, the prices now reflect this ($100k+ for a decent example).

My '83 SC takes 12, I have an oil cooler.  But yeah, older ones were oil/air cooled with 19mm lines running to the front to a cooler of one sort or another.  The grill on the back is indeed for air intaking to cool and for the engine to breath.   The alternator mounts a large fan on itself and blows backwards and down over the cylinders and heads and out the bottom.

Funny thing, I consider a 993 to be a "newer" car, to me an old one has a long hood.

Me too!  I still think "oh, those new-fangled 964s with their fancy-pants suspension and power assisted steering."

Railton

I've had it for 22 months. Bought it with 149,000 km, and it's at about 172,000 now.

What's broke?
- Power window switches (about $30 each at the dealer)
- Cassette holder (still broken)
- Just did upper and lower valve cover gaskets, which haven't been done since new (about $1,000)
- Replaced two rear tires (about $250 each)
- Wiper blades (about $20 each)

Oil change is every 12,000 km or once a year for me; $300 at the dealer. (I worked at head office and still have a go-to-the-dealer mentality.)

The last three weren't really broken, just worn out. The valve cover gaskets were basically disintegrating.

Get an NSX now. Values have been climbing fast. A few years ago, $30k would have gotten you a nice one (I paid $31,500 for the Porsche). Now good luck finding a clean, unmolested, low-miles NSX for twice that.

The view out of the front NSX is spectacular; it's like driving in IMAX. View out the back isn't bad either, but it feels like a big, wide car.
