Winter Tires for my Jeep Grand Cherokee - suggestions?
« on: September 28, 2016, 09:37:21 am »
I'm starting to shop for a set of winter tires for my Jeep GC.  I actually missed out on a nice set of alloy wheels with the TPMS running toyo observce GSI-5's on Kijiji a couple of weeks ago that would've worked, still watching Kijiji closely though ;)

Called a few dealerships to see what they have & one has steel wheels, no TPMS & Dunlop Winter Maxx SJ-8 for $1300 + taxes.

Also found this site https://www.4tires.ca/kits/search-dimensions?categorie=all&annee=74&marque=25&model=6622&modelsoptions=35&option=155-7-13-8 and am leaning towards the YOKOHAMA IceGUARD IG51V.  I had IceGUARD's on my Altima & loved them!!  They went thru snow really, really well & gripped the ice as well.  I had the Xi-2's on my Wrangler for 1 winter & didn't like them at all, they sucked in the snow I found, but were good on icy roads.

Anyways, any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated... but not necessarily followed

My dad got a set of Goodyear Ultra Grip WRT on steel factory rims with TPMS sensors for $1200. He said they were great and driving the thing a few times last winter, yeah, good tires.

That's a great price!! Dealer said each sensor runs around $75ea, so $300 for them alone!

The rims were only about 50 or 60 bucks a pop and goodyear was having their 4 for 3 deal.

Is he running 17" winters though, or 18's?  17's are quite a bit less, but with the ecodiesel I need to run 18"s in order to clear the rotors & calipers  :-\

Goodyear has the 4 for 3 sale on now, which basically makes their prices competitive with everyone else. I'm not really interested in their winter tires.

I checked out that 4tires.ca website that you linked in the 1010tires thread.  They only offered 17" wheels for the MDX, don't know about your GC though.

Here's a link to a comprehensive winter tire review from last year, wish they'd giv details on the testing they performed.

I Have the  Blizzacks DMV1 on my truck and they've been good. Also had the Latitude Xice2 on a CRV and liked them also, probably better on ice than the DMV1, but hard to say for sure when on two different vehicles. I think I'm going to give the Toyo GSi5 a try this year.
