Toyota is better know for reliable cars than sporty ones, but the Celica proved to be both.

My daughter wants one of these , fine by me .
Should be alot more reliable than her 98 Civic si has been .
This Celica is light weight ( 2425 lbs - 2460 lbs  GT ) . Its nimble and sporty, I'm sure she will love it .

Even the previous gen Celica with oval front lamps was extraordinary small car for...every day use. I still remember Carlos Sainz became world rally champion with it. Toyota or TRD shouldn't kill it, entusiasts deserve this one!

When I bought my RSX Type S, I looked at the Celica GTS as well.  Beside being more $$$, the only problem I had with the Celica was the sales guy at Tony Graham Toyota would could not have been less interested in trying to sell me a car.  Got the RSX instead, I couldn't have been happier!

The GT-S was more money than the Type S!?!

Had a new 2000 GT-S for 5 flawless years.
Probably the only car I ever had that I regretted selling too soon.
Still see a couple in our subdivision that appear to have held up well.

This was the last good Celica, dont believe me, drive a GT-4. A freind of mine looked at one of these in the early 2000's, both him and I found the styling a little suspect, the gear change was crap and the 180 horse engine had to be thrashed to get any power and sounded bad at high rpms. He ended up in a Civic Si coupe.
Lighten up Francis.....

I remember test drove an 6 speed manual GTS before, on paper this car is awsome  -- 8000rpm, 6 speed manual, light weight ....

but I found out the gears a way too tall - I remember on second gear 8000rpm is above 110 Km/h .... this kills all the fun, as if anyone want to feel the VVTi-L, you can to go beyond legal speed limit , and if you want to use 3rd gear, you will be in 140+ range which is impossible in most place in Canada.

Civic Si is much better, 2nd gear max out below 90km/h and 3rd gear is 120km range, so ones can play between 2 and 3rd gear all day long without getting into trouble ....

I've always liked this car, but I can't deny the greater appeal of the Acura Integra of those years.  It was far sportier.  My favourite time for the Celica/Supra was early 80's when it was RWD and had the 150hp 6 cyl engine.  I drove it and it was so much fun.  I loved the boxy design.  The seat pump thing (or whatever it was) was so unique too.  Also the retro 70s Celicas were pretty cool.

My Sister had a silver 2003 GT. Great milage, nimble, no major reliability issues considering it was a flood recovery (the only issue being a starter failure -- I suspect it was the contacts on the inside, but the rebuilt unit was cheap enough that I didn't bother to investigate further). We test drove both GT and GTS models and found that she preferred the cloth seats of the GT. Not being someone who drives very hard either, the engine choice was a no-brainer and her mileage didn't disappoint.
Probably the only car she will ever own that I wish I had bought instead of her. May it RIP. :(

I have always liked the look of the last gen. Celica, but alas, at 6'3", I didn't fit in it very well.   I did have a 1981 Corolla SR5 nocthback hatch and my brother had the fast back, the former having just enough extra head room to accomodate me.  That car got me hooked on Toyotas for many years, but they don't make them like they used to and that isn't a good thing imo.

GT-4?

I agree, the last generation of Celica was a bit boring. I'd have much rather had the Integra/RSX over it. Same way I feel about the Scion tC: nice enough car, but nothing special whatsoever.

This is the best car I've ever owned! Great handling, and fuel economy is right on the NRCan figures. Bonus - the trunk is big enough for two bicycles, fully assembled! (maybe not mtn bikes)
Decided against the GTS for the reasons stated in the review - if you superimpose the power and torque curves, up to about 5500 rpm the output curves for both engines are about the same - and the GT uses regular gas, vs premium for the GTS.
