Have you considered the Lexus RX350 or the Cadillac XT5?

Highlander is out for being too small. And also not interesting in any way whatsoever. RX350 only a 2 row and I think the XT5 is a 2 row also no?

If I had unlimited coin it would be a XC90 T8. But sadly coin is limited.

A glance on autotrader shows only one beige interior MDX Elite within 250km. She doesn't want a 2017 either (and I want to keep some coin in my pocket). We might have to boogie.

One thing your test drive of the MDX will not have revealed is just how good is the SH-AWD I severe winter weather. Very capable with a set of winter tires.

Psst: Former TL driver :P

I've driven, fairly extensively, both the MDX elite and an Explorer Platinum. I'd take the MDX without a second thought. Yes the Explorer has power, and definitely feels way quicker than the MDX, it's also a little more spacious. However, I have not been impressed by the build quality on the Explorer; the last tester I had, the thin metal (aluminum?) hood would visibly vibrate on the highway, it drove me nuts! Fuel economy in the Explorer is also pretty bad, especially in the city, I'd probably save a litre or two per 100kms in the MDX.
The MDX's big advantage in my eyes is that it's a much more confident drive; it feels smaller (the Explorer feels massive thanks to extremely deep a-pillars), handles sharper and is much lighter on it's feet, which is nice when you need to dodge the usual road hazard drivers.

Yeah, my wife has been watching MDX reviews all night on Youtube. We'll sleep on it.

Gotta find somewhere to store the GLK for ~4-5 months though. Anyone know a reputable car storage place that isn't $400/month? ???

I've had mine - 2016 Sport 3.5 - for a year and some now and have had 0 issues....13k right now, took it on a road trip to ON, 4300km back and forth, 0 issues and great cruiser as well.

Before I bought the Explorer I was in between the MDX tech and Sport...both were very competent and what sway me to the Explorer was 1- power 2-payments came out $170/bi-weekly lower than the MDX after some haggle, although the MSRP for both was very close.

Did you drive a pre 2016 MDX without the 9 speed? On our testing the MDX felt nearly as quick which surely must be down to the transmission and much lower weight.

I drove both, with and without the 9-speed. I didn't notice and big difference in quickness, but I didn't drive them back to back (probably a year a part). The 3.5EB in the Ford hauls ass, where the MDX feels only adequate. That said, I'd still take the MDX, unless I was in some sort of hellish suburban soccer mom drag race....

Weird. C&D actually has the MDX a tick quicker to 60 than the 3.5EB Explorer. But I've seen numbers go either way.

Perhaps the Explorer is better real world given the torque and less shifting required.

Didn't realize the criteria had to be 3rd row SUV's only.  Since you were down to two smaller strollers.  I figured one of the larger 2nd row SUV's would be adequate.  IIRC, family of 4 right?

Sure but what large 2 row SUV is sufficiently compelling to nix the above choices? And if I can get 3rd set of seats and more space out of the deal then why not?

Maybe an RX350 could be argued for, but the MDX suits us better.

And I'd love me a ML63 but lets be serious. ;D

When you were driving the Explorer, did you check out the Edge Sport?  Same engine right?

Well if I wasn't towing, I would take the RX350.  I find it very roomy.  Bonus is the Made in Ontario, and it's designed to run on regular.

I think the Edge Sport has the 2.7 which is even better probably. But again how much outright performance do we need in the family hauler vs utility and Honda reliability.

RX doesn't do it for me personally.

Do MDX Elite models still come with ADS suspension? Watch out for early leaking shocks. Some leak within 4 or 5 years.

It has "Amplitude Reactive Dampers" but I don't think that's the same thing is it? I think the previous generation had a suspension button in the car...but this one does not.
