2015 Tesla Model S 70D
« on: February 08, 2016, 12:43:40 pm »
Me before driving:

"Poor panel gaps, no storage, doors finished like Payless Shoe Store products, no headroom in the back, poor ergonomics and they sell this 100k$ ?!?"

Me after driving it and flooring it a few times in a deserted and safe area:

"Ok, how can I finance this?".

If I was a movie character, I'd smoke a cigarette after flooring it (cue Saf).

So the build quality isn't very good?

It's more FCA than FGC in that respect.

Looked at some pics.  The inside of the door looks weird too.  Also don't like how the nasty woodgrain meets up with the big screen there.  Big clash.  Exterior screams futuristic, as does the infotainment, then the dated woodgrain.  Don't suppose you can get brushed aluminum or something...

Hopefully it doesn't have FCA or FGC reliability! :-)

They aren't the most reliable things.  But give them credit since it's their first car.

From what I've read, it's actually far, far worse. Motorized door handles are the worse bits, but motors, batteries (big and small) and various suspension bits seem frail and replacement-prone. The monster torque also eats up tires, no matter how you drive. Impressive car for a startup, but it's still a startup.

Edit: I have to save my words for something I'm working on, but driving qualities are solid for a first car, and it looks fantastic, but the "car" bits need improvement and I expect a solid leap with the Model E given how high they set the bar with this vs expectations.

haha, wow, very cool. It seems like anyone who gets behind the wheel of one of these things has a similar revelatory experience. Really need to drive one some day. Have you driven other high-end sport sedans? Build quality and interior issues aside, how does the drive compare?

The lack of a glorious engine note is a deal breaker for real enthusiasts.

That aural pleasure is part of the draw and experience of driving a hot car.

I'm one of those weirdos who just doesn't care that much about an engine note. I mean, I love the sound of a V10 or a Porsche flat-6, but there's something that just screams "progress" (or on this case whispers it) about a quiet car that goes fast. I love the idea of a Tesla S blowing the doors off a Maserati or Jag V8, making all their racket - like angry old dogs, all bark and no bite  ;)

It would be relatively simple for Tesla to play whatever engine noise through the car's speakers. I guess very few are interested in that "upgrade".

Strongly agree.  And having the engine noise go through speakers is a deal breaker as well.

Noisy car?

Only for people like this:

I don't mean noisy.  But I want to hear the motor sing as I rev it high on the on ramp, shift, rev it high some more to quickly get in the HOV lane!

All right. To be entirely honest I love quiet V6 rumble of my Genesis and how it goes through seemingly endless (fast & furious style) number of gears. Once in awhile when on a quiet street I'd do a lazy 0-60 just to hear the engine's song. However I'd trade it in a heartbeat to silent and effortless burst of torque and cornering limits of the Model S.

My only issue with Teslas is I have never seen one accelerate quickly.  There are lots of them in the Vancouver area and I see 2-3 every day on my commute. Weirdly they are the slowest drivers on the road.  I get that you can't use warp speed everytime but if I owned one I'd have to do it at least once a day.
