Modern Classics: Dodge Magnum, 2005-2008
« on: August 04, 2010, 04:04:55 am »

The "uber-cool" rear-wheel drive Dodge Magnum, a collision of old-school design melded with that local "chop shop" mentality, offered an alternative to SUVs for folks hauling around kids, sports equipment and golf clubs, says contributor Jeff Burry.

Maybe not the entire line-up, but I think the SRT-8 version is worthy.

"Hmmmmm.....definitely not a car I would consider to be in the "Modern Classic" category."

I have to agree with rrocket.  40 year old designs made yesterday don't qualify as classics and wretched excess ain't cool no longer.

Well, if you look at it as a 'modern' interpretation of the 'classic' American station wagon with V8 power and RWD which has been extinct for some time now, sure.

Collectible, likely not.

I might be in the minority here, but I've always thought these were one of the worst looking vehicles on the road.  A modern classic?  Definitely not in my eyes.

My brother-law-law has an '06 Magnum.  I've lost count of how many times that piece of cr@p  went back to the dealer for electronics and transmission issues.  No thanks...

Having owned an 05 I am one of those people that liked the looks of the vehicle, having three kids all in Hockey I liked the trunk space and the large back seat.
what I didn't like was the fact that I was on a first name basis with all the service people and most of the mechanics at the dodge dealership since I had to bring this dam thing in on what seemed like a bi-weekly basis to fix one thing or another(thankfully under warrantee ,except the three sets of brakes in 72K.  It's too bad that Dodge doesn't have a clue how to build a reliable car cause they sure look good

I think the concept to make this chopped and ugly vehicles was the last nail in the coffin of DaimlerChrysler. In addition they are definetly unreliable and fuel hungry. The depreciation is enormous throughout the years - what collectability for this crap?

First thing who comes to mind every time I see this thing is my neighbour who was struggling to get into his slightly-sloped driveway when there was a bit of ice one morning.  :rofl2:

Oh, and the second thing that comes to mind is this:

I think the SRT-8 is certainly a curiosity, but I don't think "collectible" when I see this.   You never know though, as there aren't many around.

Would make a great hearse for any passed-on HEMI gearheads out there....   'git er done' funeral service.

My brother test drove one of these last year, it had the small V-6 in it.  Drove it in a bit of a snowstorm of all the luck, and couldn't believe how well it handled being rear drive, or how well it took off from an intersection despite the 3" of slush on the ground.  He test drove a Freestyle too, and bought it despite the fact the Dodge felt better and more confident in the snow in every way (I didn't believe him until I drove the Freestyle - pathetic traction control - I do better in my car without it! Sheesh).  Anyway, he bought the Ford instead, after all, IT is still a Dodge, and he didn't want to take that chance, despite the Ford's CVT style tranny.  (funny thing - I saw the Magnum in the service lot, at the dealer that sold it, this AM on my way to work, probably the 3rd time I've seen it there in the last 6 months.  I think he made the right choice.)  I would like to pick up an SRT8 myself, I think it'd be cool, but then there's always that nagging feeling of imminent failure lurking in the near future.

In Europe they never had this, but instead got the, IMHO, ultra cool 300C wagon.  Make mine a CRD, please.

I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

Spent a week in one of these (SXT..no Hemi ..boo)  in Toronto and it has to have some of the worst visibility in a non exotic ever (try driving in a Lotus Esprit sometime) I spent the entire week praying before I changed lanes.  As a highway cruiser fine but around town blech. I also spent a week with a 300C Hemi and found it far more enjoyable.

That's what the Magnum should have looked like, all right. It's a neat car, for sure. Not sure I'd so far as to call it a modern classic, but I think Dodge deserves a nod for bringing a RWD station wagon with big power to market.

That and all the LX's. At least with the Hemi.

The Hemi with the Mercedes 5 speed is one very sweet combo. The return of the full size RWD car to the US market, and with lots of power available. The SRT8's in all body styles are gonna be big money cars in the future.

What's the timeline?  2500 years?  If yes, then......maybe.
